The Lord of the Rings was always intended as a single-volume work, though it was originally published in three volumes in and , in part due to post-war paper shortages. This edition, originally issued as a paperback, has Tolkien's definitive text, from the second edition of , published in one volume for the first time.
First Edition. The Fellowship of the Ring: 1st Edition, second impression Numeral "4" at bottom of page Dustwrapper price clipped, states Second Impression. Tinted top edge faded, traces of foxing to the base edge of the pages; original Melbourne book seller's metallic sticker at lower right of front paste down.
Margaret Webber , previous owner's name at top right of front end page, traces of foxing to same. Map appears to be unopened by previous owner. No damage. Lower corner of rear foldover clipped. Short tears to either side of head of spine, and bottom right of spine, no loss.

The Return of the King: First edition, third impression. Dustwrapper price clipped. Very slight foxing of front and rear end pages, bookseller's sticker to bottom of front paste down, map appears unopened by previous owner.
The dustwrapper has rubbing and short splits top and tail of the spine section, and lower right of front panel, the rear panel of the jacket has a brown moisture mark, and a 2" tear lower right of bottom edge. In each of the grouped photographs, book 1 is on the left. Second impression.

Books and jackets are surprisingly fresh and well preserved. A very striking and early set of Tolkien's classic saga, rarely seen in such nice condition. Easton Press. These hardcover books are matched and Fine, being square and tight. The green leather boards and spines have no wear with pristine gold embossed lettering and decoration. The bands on the spine show no wear. The gilt edged pages and silk moire endpages are clean, with no markings or folds. Each volume has a color frontispiece in pristine condition save the guide and atlas as issued.
Each volume of the Lord of the Rings and Simarillion contain their maps in pristine condition 4 maps total. None of the volumes contain bookplates, but 5 Easton Press decorative blank bookplates are included in this lot. There are no dust jackets; as issued. Each volume comes with an attached silk bookmark. Not ex-lib. No remainder mark.

First editions, eleventh printing of The Fellowship of the Ring, eighth printing of The Two Towers, ninth printing of The Return of the King, with the terminal fold-out maps tipped in to each volume. Publisher's red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, red topstains; in the original pictorial dust jackets, with illustrations of the Eye of Sauron, the One Ring and its Elvish inscription to the front panels.
Fine with only the slightest touch of rubbing; unclipped dust jackets, with some light wear and a few nicks to the extremities, spines with some fading and light toning, else near fine. An excellent set. The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy trilogy, written as the sequel to Tolkien's novel The Hobbit. It tells the story of the second attempt of the men, elves, and dwarves of Middle Earth to destroy the Dark Lord Sauron, the "Lord of the Rings. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo leaves the ring to his nephew Frodo, who joins with a group of men, hobbits, dwarves, and elves on a quest to destroy it.
In The Two Towers, Frodo and Sam continue alone on their increasingly perilous journey to destroy the ring while the remaining members of the Fellowship try to protect the realms of Middle Earth from the troops of Sauron, who continues to gain strength as Frodo brings the Ring closer. The Return of the King concludes the trilogy with the final destruction of Sauron and the reestablishment of proper order in the worlds of men and hobbits. Each volume is divided into two books and contains chapters narrated by different characters.. Hard Cover. Complete in 3 volumes.
